Rattler defense grounds Jets

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kansas — St. Mary's watched Newman score eight quick points over the first three minutes of Thursday's Heartland Conference clash.

Suffice it to say the Rattlers tightened things up a bit defensively thereafter.

St. Mary's Women's Basketball yielded a total of eight points over the entirety of the second half, erasing a nine-point halftime deficit in a 52-38 victory at Fugate Gymnasium.

Tia Mason led the way with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the floor, while Arysia Porter and Soteria Banks also reached double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Porter and Alexia Torres swiped four steals apiece, anchoring a defensive effort that forced 17 turnovers in the game and allowed the Jets (16-9, 7-4) to shoot just 9 percent from the floor in the second half (2 of 22).

The effort allowed the Rattlers (11-12, 5-5) to put a 30-21 halftime deficit squarely in the rearview mirror for a victory that put the Rattlers in fourth place in the league standings.
