Offense, pitching push Rattlers past Rangers in home opener

SAN ANTONIO — Abigale Carney spent little time getting acquainted with the Softball Stadium at The Park at St. Mary's.
 
In her first home game as a Rattler, the freshman went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, helping St. Mary's to a 10-1 victory over Regis in the opening game of the 2018 St. Mary's NCAA Division II College Classic.
 
Equally as impressive was the performance of starting pitcher Staci Johns who tossed a complete game, allowing only one run on two hits and a walk, improving to 2-1 this season.
 
Striking for three runs in the bottom of the first, the Rattlers capitalized on a fielding error with two outs, beginning with an RBI double by Brenda Iparraguirre. The rally would be capped by a Johns RBI double to right field.
 
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Rattlers would explode for seven runs in the fourth, beginning with an inside-the-park home run from Carney.
 
A two-RBI single by Alex Moreno and a bases-loaded walk to Iparraguirre set the stage for Carney who once again delivered with a bases clearing triple.
 
On Day 2 of the College Classic, the Rattlers will play a pair of games, headlined by the Texas Woman's Pioneers at 12:15 p.m. in a rematch of last season's South Central Regional matchup.
