Men's basketball stumbles at Angelo State

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

ANGELO, Texas – The St. Mary's men's basketball team couldn't hold the early lead and dropped its second-straight game to a team receiving votes in the NABC Coaches poll, losing 89-63 at Angelo State on Saturday evening.

The Rams, who are now 7-2 on the season, will be a common opponent in future seasons once the Rattlers (6-5) join the Lonestar Conference next year. On Saturday, they were led by the almost unstoppable Antonio Singleton with 33 points on 5-5 shooting from beyond the arc and 10 rebounds. He was joined in double digit scoring by Daron Mims with 16 and Kiair Crouch with 10.

The Rattlers were led by freshman point guard Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) with 15 points. This is the ninth straight game that Jordan has scored in double figures and the second time in the last three games he's led the team in scoring. Senior Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) was right behind Jordan with 14 points and junior college transfer Lamont Traylor (Las Vegas, Nevada) had a Blue & Gold career-best nine rebounds. Jordan, junior Markques Houston (Houston, Texas) and freshman Timmy Benavides (San Antonio) each had a team-best three assists on the night and Benavides had the squad's only steal in the game. Senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) also had both of the team's blocked shots in the contest.

St. Mary's shot just 39 percent from the field for the game (23-for-59) and just 27.8 percent from the three-point line (5-for-18). The Rattlers also managed just 63.2 percent from the free throw line (12-for-19). The team did manage to win the battle of the boards, winning 37 to 36, however, the team turned the ball over 20 times, compared to just seven for the Rams. The Rams shot 45.3 percent from the floor (29-for-64) and were 10-for-21 from beyond the arc (47.6 percent). They also shot 61.8 percent from the charity stripe (21-for-34).

The Rams scored first, but the Rattlers quickly answered with the next six points in the contest as Radojicic had four and Peterson scored on a second-chance layup for the 6-2 lead with 17:31 to play. After an ASU bucket, the Blue & Gold stretched the lead to five, 9-4 on a free throw by Peterson. A mini 4-0 run by the Rams made it a one-point game, 9-8, but Jordan nailed a three-pointer for the 12-8 advantage. ASU scored on a fast-break bucket and Jordan made a traditional three-point play to extend the lead back to five, 15-10. Radojicic nailed a pair of free throws at the 13:24 mark for the team's biggest lead of the night, 17-10. Ten straight points by Singleton gave the lead to the Rams, 20-17 with 11:41, but Jordan answered with a mini 4-0 run of his own for the Rattlers as they regained the lead, 21-20 at the 9:53 point. A jumper by Crouch for the Rams at 9:02 gave the lead back to ASU, 22-21 and they never relinquished it. They'd go on to lead by 15 at halftime, 43-28.

The Rams scored the first five of the second half to push the advantage out to 20, 48-28 and would build their lead to as much as 32 several times during the second half. The final spread was just 26 as Benavides and junior Nikau McCullough (Hamilton, New Zealand) both hit three-pointers with just over a minute remaining to cut into the final deficit.

The Rattlers return to Bill Greehey Arena for the first of four home games on December 14 to host Western New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for purchase.
