Balanced attack lifts Men's Hoops past Mustangs

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Leading wire to wire for the first time all season, the St. Mary's men's basketball team used a balanced scoring and defensive attack to handily defeat the visiting Western New Mexico Mustangs, 91-56.

The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Rattlers and moved them to 7-5 on the season, while the Mustangs fell to 3-4 with the loss.

Five different Rattlers scored in double figures on the evening, led by junior Markques Houston (Houston, Texas) with his game-high 18 points.  Junior forward Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) scored a career-best 15 points, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line on the night. Senior Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) chipped in 12 points and both senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) and junior Curtlon Wesley (Houston) added 10. Houston, Peterson and Gaspert all tied for game honors with six rebounds and senior Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) and freshman Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) led the way with three assists and two blocked shots each. Houston also led the team with a pair of steals.

Western New Mexico was led by Davis Wade with 11 points and Jon-Reese Woodson and Willie McCray with four rebounds.

St. Mary's dominated the inside game as they scored almost as many points in the paint as WNMU scored in the entire game, tallying 54 in the paint during the contest. It is the second time this season the Rattlers have scored over 50 points in the paint, as they scored 52 against Our Lady of the Lake on November 26.

The Rattlers also shot well from the floor, connecting on 53.1 percent of their attempts for the game, making 34 of 64. From the free throw line, the team made 87.5 percent of its tries, sinking 21-of-24. The only area they struggled was from beyond the arc, where they were just 2-of-13 for the game (15.4 percent). The Rattlers defense held the Mustangs to 33.3 percent shooting for the game (16-for-48) and just 13.3 percent from beyond the arc (2-for-15). They also shot 64.7 percent from the charity stripe and had plenty of attempts, making 22-of-34.

St. Mary's jumped out to the early 7-0 lead and the first six points were all scored by Radojicic. Western New Mexico finally broke into the scoring column at the 16:35 mark on a pair of free throws. The Mustangs hit their first field goal of the game at 16:09 to cut the deficit to three, 7-4, but St. Mary's answered with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to stretch the lead to 11, 15-4. The Mustangs closed within four, 21-17 at the 10:19 point, but the Rattlers again answered, using a 7-1 run to regain a comfortable advantage. The Blue & Gold entered the locker room with a 12-point lead at the break, 41-29.

The Rattlers scored the first four points of the second half and never looked back, building their largest lead at the end of the game, 35 points, 91-56. The 91 points is the most scored by the Rattlers this season and the highest scoring output since the team scored 99 in a 99-94 win over Newman on Jan. 4, 2018.

The Rattlers have two home games remaining in the 2018 calendar year, hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday, December 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Northeastern State on the 30th at 3 p.m. Tickets are still available for both contests.
