SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's men's basketball team closed out the 2018 calendar year in convincing fashion, defeating the visiting Northeastern State Riverhawks 72-55, to improve to 9-5 on the year.

The Riverhawks (6-5) scored the first basket of the game and led for a total of 40 seconds in the game, but the Rattlers quickly took over behind the senior leadership of Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas), who hit three three-pointers and a long jumper for 11 points in the first two and a half minutes as they built a 14-5 lead and never trailed again. In fact, the Riverhawks never got any closer than six points the remainder of the contest and the Rattlers led by double digits the entire second half.

Brooks ended the game with a season-high 22 points, the fourth time in his career he's topped the 20-point mark. He scored 16 of those points in the first half and had one of the team's four blocked shots as four different players rejected a shot on the evening. Brooks was also second on the team with eight rebounds, trailing only fellow senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio), who came off the bench to lead the game with 13. It is the sixth time this year Peterson has notched double figures in rebounds for the Rattlers.

Also scoring in double figures for the Blue & Gold were freshman Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) with 13 and senior Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) with 10. This is the 11th time in 14 games Jordan has hit double figures in points and he has tallied at least seven points in every game this year and Radojicic has hit double digits 10 times this season, including the last four games and has had eight or more in every game except the season opener. Jordan also led the game with five assists, while junior Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas) led the team with two steals.

Northeastern State was led in scoring by Tanner Mouse with 11 points, while Caleb Smith had 10 points. Aaron Givens had a team high six rebounds. D'Angelo Jackson had three assists, while Jackson and Smith each had two steals and Jackson had the club's lone block of the day.

The Rattlers out-rebounded the Riverhawks by 11, 44-to-33 and led by as many as 21 in the game, leading 48-27 with 17:36 remaining in the second half after junior Markques Houston (Houston) made a three-pointer. St. Mary's shot 42 percent from the field in the game (21-for-50) and just one-tenth better from the three-point line (8-for-19). They also shot 66.7 percent from the free throw line, making 22-of-33. The defense held NES to 33.3 percent from the floor (19-for-57) and just 18.5 percent from beyond the arc (5-for-27). The Riverhawks also struggled from the free throw line, making just half of their attempts (12-for-24).

St. Mary's returns to Heartland Conference action after almost a two-week layoff, hosting Lubbock Christian on January 12 at 3 p.m. The Rattlers are currently 1-1 in league play.
