Men's basketball falters vs #15 St. Edward's

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – When the St. Mary's and St. Edward's men's basketball teams play, you can usually throw season records and rankings out the window and expect a battle no matter what and that's exactly what happened on Saturday afternoon inside Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's.

The two teams were knotted at 43-43 after the first 20 minutes of play, but the 15th-ranked Hilltoppers (8-1, 2-0 Heartland Conference) were able to pull away late and defeat the home Rattlers, 84-68. With the loss, the Rattlers move to 6-4 on the year and 1-1 in league play.

A big reason for the Rattlers success in the first half was the hot shooting from junior transfer Markques Houston (Houston, Texas), who poured in 17, including 7-of-7 from the free throw line. He ended the game with 23 points – the second time this year he's eclipsed the 20-point milestone – and he led the team with eight rebounds. The only other player to score in double digits was freshman Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) with 11. It is the eighth straight game Jordan has scored in double figures and he also led the team with four assists on the evening.

St. Edward's entered the game leading the nation in steals and the Rattlers held the Hilltoppers to their lowest output of the season, with six, tying two other games. SEU was led in scoring by Ashton Spears with 27 points, while Corey Shervill scored 16 and Lucas Doria added 10. Dorian Lopez led all players with a game-high nine rebounds and five assists.

Both teams struggled with foul trouble in the game, but the Rattlers got hit a little harder as three of their five starters fouled out and they were whistled 26 times. All five starters for SEU had at least two fouls and they were called for 20 fouls as the two teams combined to shoot 44 free throws. The Blue & Gold missed only four, going 17-for-21 (81 percent), while the Hilltoppers were 15-for-23 (65.2 percent).

St. Edward's scored first in the game and held the lead early, but a three-pointer by Houston at 14:42, shortly after he sank three free throws tied the game at 12-12 for the first tie of the contest, and on the next possession, the Rattlers took their first lead of the game on a hook shot in the paint by senior Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia). SEU went on a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead, but StMU immediately answered with an 8-0 run of its own to regain the lead at 22-19 with 10:10 to play. After a three-pointer by SEU, the Rattlers again built a five-point lead, but the Hilltoppers managed to tie the game at 29-29 with 6:29 on the clock. Again the lead changed hands as SEU hit back-to-back triples, but the Rattlers stayed within striking distance and knotted the score at 43-43 on a jumper by Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) with 24 seconds left in the stanza.

The Hilltoppers opened the second half on an 8-0 run, but once again, the Rattlers immediately answered with an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game for the eighth time at 51-51 with 15:20 left. This time SEU used its longest run of the game, an 11-0 run. The Rattlers scored 10 of the next 12 points to cut the deficit to four, 65-61, at 8:35 on a Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) three-pointer, but were unable to get any closer the rest of the game and the Hilltoppers pulled away in the end, winning 84-68.

St. Mary's heads to Angelo State on Saturday, December 8 for a non-conference matchup before returning to Bill Greehey Arena to host Western New Mexico on Friday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m.
