Women's Basketball leads wire to wire

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas – The St. Mary's women's basketball team led wire to wire on Saturday evening, scoring the first 10 points of the game against Southern Nazarene at Lubbock Christian and they never looked back.

The Storm got as close as three, but the Rattlers led by as many as 16 and led for over 39 minutes as they improved to 4-1 on the year and won their third-straight contest. SNU is still in search of its first win of the year and fell to 0-4.

Senior guard Arysia Porter (San Antonio) led all players with 16 points five assists and a career-best eight steals, which is tied for the fourth-most in school history, tying Jackie Woods (2103 at UAFS) and Kiara Etheridge (2014 at Lubbock Christian). The school record for thefts in a game is 11 by Dezirae Elias against Angelo State in 2014, while Elias is also second on the list with nine.

On Saturday, senior guard Kaitlyn Walla (Georgetown, Texas) was also in double figures in scoring with 12 points behind the strength of four three-pointers. Walla already has 21 three-pointers on the year (4.2 per game) and her per game average leads the Heartland Conference by a large margin.

Sophomore forward Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) brought down a game-high nine rebounds, had four assists and blocked a season-high four shots, which ties her career-high.

The Storm was led by forward Abby Niehues with 13 points and guard Alexus Jones with 12, while guard Adrienne Berry had a team-high seven rebounds.
After the 10-0 start by the Blue & Gold, SNU scored six of the next eight points to close within three, 17-14 with 6:45 to play in the second quarter. The Rattlers promptly answered with another 10-0 run, as Wilson started things with a jumper, Porter made a layup and junior guard Alexia Torres (San Antonio) and Porter nailed back-to-back triples. The teams traded baskets and the half ended with the Rattlers up 29-17.

Wilson and Banks made back-to-back baskets to begin the third quarter, but the Storm scored eight of the next 11 to close within 11, 36-25 with 6:41 to go. Walla hit one of her patented three-pointers and the Storm scored eight of the final 11 in the quarter, with Banks breaking up the scoring with her lone three-pointer of the game.
The teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter until the final 30 seconds when the Storm finished the game on a 6-0 run for the 56-47 final.

The team plays at Texas A&M Commerce on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to host the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday against Central Missouri and Kutztown. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
