Defense holds strong for Men's Hoops

LAREDO, Texas – A balanced scoring attack again helped lift the St. Mary's men's basketball team to victory, this time a 75-71 win over Texas-Permian Basin in the opening round of the Courtyard Marriott Classsic at Texas A&M International.

The win evened the Rattlers record at 2-2 on the year, while the Falcons moved to 2-1 with the loss. The Rattlers will face Arlington Baptist on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in their final game at the Classic.

Junior guard Markques Houston (Houston, Texas) led StMU with 19 points and a Rattlers' career-high eight rebounds, while freshman point guard Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) scored 18. Senior forward Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) added 13 points and senior guard Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) chipped in 10. Senior guard Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) again led the game with nine rebounds and a season-high five steals.

UTPB entered the game, averaging 99.5 points per game and the StMU defense held them to 71 points. The Rattlers held the Falcons to just .297 shooting in the first half (11-for-37) and .397 for the game (27-for-68). On the offensive side of the floor, StMU shot .456 from the field (26-for-57), which included .323 from beyond the arc (10-for-31) and they made 13-of-17 from the free throw line (.765).

Unlike the first three games of the season, the Blue & Gold led the majority of Friday's contest, holding the lead for 35:42 of the 40 minutes and they trailed for just 49 seconds. The remaining time was spent in a tie – as there were six throughout the contest. The Rattlers led by as many as 10 and never trailed by more than two.

St. Mary's will return home to host the annual River City Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 23-24 at Bill Greehey Arena. The Rattlers play Talladega on Friday at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
