Men's Basketball sweeps Courtyard Marriott Classic

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas – The St. Mary's men's basketball team gritted out a tough win over Arlington Baptist on Saturday afternoon, 73-62, at Texas A&M International in the Courtyard Marriott Classic.

The Rattlers trailed early and battled back to win their third-straight contest, despite a poor shooting night from the free throw line, that saw them make just 19-of-32 (59.4 percent). However, the Rattlers made six of their final seven in the final 1:15 of the game to put the game away.

For the second-straight night, junior guard Markques Houston (Houston, Texas) led the team in scoring with 19 points. He recorded his first double-double for the Blue & Gold with 10 rebounds and added five assists. Both seniors Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) and Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) scored 13 points and freshman point guard Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) added 12 points. Peterson notched his second double-double of the season with a season-best 16 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end of the floor.

Kennedy Jones led the Patriots with 16 points, while Jalin Holden came off the bench to score 14.

A big reason for the Rattlers success was their domination on the boards. StMU out-rebounded Arlington Baptist 40-22 in the game, including an 18-6 advantage on the offensive glass. Another big positive for the Rattlers was they turned the ball over just 10 times, compared to the 25 from Friday afternoon.

Radojicic started the Rattlers scoring with a jumper in the paint for the first tie of the game at 2-2. A Peterson free throw was sandwiched between three-straight baskets by Kennedy Jones for Arlington Baptist as they built an 8-3 lead at the first media timeout. Houston hit a three-pointer to cut the lead in half, 8-6 with 14:30 to play. The Patriots answered with a three, but Houston hit a jumper and Brooks nailed a triple to knot the score at 11-11. The squads traded free throws and the Patriots used a mini 5-0 run, then scored four more after a Jordan triple to take their biggest lead of the game, 22-15, with 6:32 remaining in the half. The Rattlers answered with nine of the next 11 points, including two layups by Radojicic and a three-pointer by junior guard Nikau McCullough (Hamilton, New Zealand) to tie the score for the third time at 24-24. After the final media timeout of the stanza, the Rattlers took their first lead of the game on a Jordan layup and a dunk by junior Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) gave StMU its largest lead of the first half, 28-24. The teams traded points over the final three minutes to go into the locker room separated by just two points, 32-30.

A three-pointer by the Patriots started the scoring in the second half and marked the second lead change of the contest. Peterson immediately responded with a layup, taking the lead back for the Rattlers, one they'd never relinquish. The Patriots managed to tie the game two more times, at 44-44 with 11:41 and at 46-46 with 10:09, but the Rattler defense held AB to just 16 points over the final 10 minutes of the game, while the offense managed 27 points. StMU used back-to-back 7-0 runs to build a 13-point lead with 2:32. The first run saw layups by Houston and Peterson and free throws by Peterson and Jordan, while the second run had a three-pointer and dunk by Houston and a layup by Radojicic. The runs were interrupted by a AB three-pointer.

St. Mary's will return home to host the annual River City Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 23-24 at Bill Greehey Arena. The Rattlers play Talladega on Friday at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Before returning home, they will play an exhibition game at Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
