KINGSVILLE, Texas – Double figures abounded on Wednesday evening as the St. Mary's men's basketball team recorded its first victory of the season with a 60-55 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Four of the five starters for the Rattlers scored in double figures, while the fifth, senior guard Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) led all players with 18 points, while freshman point guard Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) added 15 and both senior guard Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) and junior guard Markques Houston (Houston, Texas) each chipped in 10.

Peterson also led the Blue & Gold with five assists, three steals and he helped seal the victory with a blocked shot in the waning seconds of the game as Kingsville's Chauncey Thomas shot a layup which would have brought the Javelinas within three.

With the win, StMU is now 1-2 on the young season, while Texas A&M Kingsville is also 1-2. The Rattlers head to Laredo for the Courtyard Marriott Classic where they face Texas-Permian Basin on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Arlington Baptist on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. They return home to host the annual River City Classic on Nov. 23 and 24, hosting Talladega and Southeastern Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m. both evenings.

In the first half on Wednesday, it took over two minutes before either team got in on the scoring and Radojicic scored the first six for the Rattlers, making a pair of free throws, a layup and a jumper for the early 6-4 lead at the 16:28 point. The Javelinas scored the next nine points over a six-minute stretch before Houston snapped the rally with a jumper at the 10:33 mark. The Rattlers used a mini 6-0 run to knot the score at 14-14 at 7:30. The score was again tied at 16-16, 18-18 and 20-20, but Kingsville would score the final bucket of the half for the 22-20 advantage at halftime.

Radojicic tied the game up again just 14 seconds into the second-half with a jumper in the paint on an assist by Jordan. Kingsville built a four-point lead, 31-27, but back-to-back three-pointers by Brooks gave the lead back to St. Mary's, 33-31, with 13:38 remaining. The Javelinas immediately tied the game on a pair of free throws and regained the lead on a fastbreak layup at 12:30. Jordan scored nine straight points for the Rattlers, including a three-pointer and a pair of free throws gave the edge back to the Rattlers, 42-40 with 8:53 on the clock. A seven-point run for Kingsville lifted them to a five-point lead, but it didn't last long as Radojicic made a layup, Houston nailed a pair of free throws and Jordan sank another triple to tie the score at 49-49 with 4:00 to play. With 2:35 to go and the score tied at 51-51, Radojicic made consecutive jumpers in the paint and after Brooks stole the ball, Jordan was fouled and sunk both free throws to give the Rattlers a six-point cushion, 57-51 with 36 seconds remaining. It was the largest lead of the game for StMU. With seven seconds left, Houston was fouled and made both free throws to ice the game.

St. Mary's struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just .381 from the field and missing all five three-point attempts. They improved to .407 in the second half and .364 (4-for-11) from beyond the arc. The team also shot well from the free throw line in the game, making 18-of-23 for .783. Texas A&M Kingsville also struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting just .258 and missing all 10 attempts from the three-point line. They shot .394 in the second stanza and .182 (2-for-11) from the arc. The Javelinas shot just .524 from the free throw line, however, making 11-of-21.
