Early deficit dooms Women's Basketball against Tarleton State

Box Score By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State rode a hot start to take down St. Mary's Women's Basketball on Saturday, as Kaitlin Walla's 21 points weren't enough in a 79-69 defeat to close out the opening weekend of play.

The TexAnns (2-0) never looked back after opening up a 27-8 lead in the first quarter, a hole the Rattlers were unable to climb out of despite outscoring Tarleton State by nine over the final three quarters.

Hannah Wilson had a double-double for the Snakes (1-1) with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Arysia Porter added 15 points and four steals. Soteria Banks also reached double figures in points, scoring 12 on 4-of-12 shooting.

Kaylee Allen led Tarleton State with 26 points in the game.

The Rattlers outscored Tarleton State 34-28 in the paint and saw their bench outproduce the TexAnns' bench 8-3. St. Mary's also committed one fewer turnover, 17 compared to Tarleton State's 18, but saw the TexAnns produce seven more second-chance points (16-9).

St. Mary's will be back in action Tuesday, when the Rattlers travel to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville, Texas at 5:30 p.m.
