HONOLULU – A dominant performance by junior
Kamryn Griffin gave the St. Mary's University a 58-51 victory over Hawaii Pacific on Sunday afternoon in the third-place game at the Outrigger Hotels Hoops in Hawaii Tip-off Classic in the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Center.
The Sharks (1-2) scored the first four points of the game, as both teams struggled to find the basket early, but the Rattlers (2-1) scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 6-4 with 3:11 left, and they never trailed again.
The scoring picked up in the second period, as the Rattlers outscored the Sharks 20-11 for the 26-15 halftime score, and held on to win as HPU won the second half 36-32.
Kamryn Griffin, a junior from San Antonio, went 13-for-18 from the field for a career-high 29 points and 13 rebounds. The 29 points are the most by a Rattler since
Christin Callens (Houston) scored 31 against Oklahoma Christian on Feb. 13, 2025 and are one-point shy of matching her mother's (StMU all-time leading scorer Erin Griffin) career-high of 30 done once in 2002 and once in 2003.
Freshman
Elizabeth Griffin (Aledo, Texas) also scored a career-high with 12 points, as she connected on 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and made both of her free throws, despite playing only 24 minutes due to foul trouble.
Junior forward
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario, Canada) posted double figures in rebounds for the first time in 2026-27, grabbing 10 as the Rattlers outrebounded the Sharks, 35-to-32. She also tied for game-high honors in assists with three, knotting freshman
Rosanelly Pastrano (San Antonio) and HPU's Lucia Ricci. Pastrano also had the team's only steal of the night, while Malik tallied the club's only blocked shot.
HPU was led in scoring by Jalen Samuel, who came off the bench to tally 15, while Ricci led the team with five rebounds.
The Rattlers starters scored 49 of the team's 58 points and brought down 27 of the team's 35 rebounds (four were team rebounds). Playing their third game in three days, both teams struggled from long distance, as StMU was 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) and HPU was 4-for-24 (16.7 percent) from the three-point line.
St. Mary's will open the home portion of its schedule on Monday, Nov. 9 when they host Concordia at 6 p.m.
