Women's basketball victorious in season opener

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – A strong first quarter led to a season opening victory for the St. Mary's women's basketball team on Friday afternoon against Texas Woman's University in the F&M Bank Tip-Off Classic hosted by Tarleton State.

Senior guard Arysia Porter (San Antonio) recorded a double-double and led all scorers with 16 points and had 11 rebounds, while sophomore forward Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) led the game with 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end of the floor. It was the 10th double-double of Porter's career and she scored her 1,100th career point with her final point of the game.

Senior guard Kaitlin Walla (Georgetown, Texas) added 15 points and sophomore guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) chipped in 14 points, while Porter led the club in both assists and steals with three and two, respectively.

The Rattlers made all four of their three-pointers in the first quarter of the game and led for over 34 minutes of the 40 in the game. StMU took a 28-23 lead to the locker room at half-time and both teams scored exactly 12 points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth quarter for the 58-53 final score.
StMU shot .375 (24-for-64) from the floor for the game and just .200 (4-for-20) from beyond the arc. They also struggled from the free throw line, connecting on just .500 (6-for-12). The Rattlers held TWU to .352 from the field (19-for-54) and .333 from the three-point line (6-for-18), however the Pioneers connected on .818 (9-for-11) from the charity stripe.

The Rattlers close out the tournament on Saturday against host Tarleton State at 5:00 p.m. in the Wisdom Gym South. The home opener for St. Mary's will be on Friday, November 23 against Central Missouri at 5:30 p.m.
