No. 18 Regis denies Men's Hoops at buzzer in season opener

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Lamont Traylor's put-back attempt at the buzzer didn't go, as No. 18 Regis staved off an upset bid from St. Mary's to win 86-85 in Friday's season opener.

Regis' Jarrett Brodbeck drained the game-winner on a mid-range jumper with six seconds remaining, offsetting Nikau McCullough's jumper that put the Rattlers ahead, 85-84, with 15 seconds before a frenzied crowd at Bill Greehey Arena.

Markques Houston dazzled in his Rattler debut, pouring in 26 points on 6-of-14 shooting before fouling out in the waning minutes of the opening day of the RMAC-Heartland Crossover. Houston went 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and sank all 10 free-throw attempts. Skyler Brooks chipped in four more 3-pointers, finishing with 18 points, while Dimitri Peterson had 12 points and six rebounds.

Caleb Jordan added nine points, while Traylor added nine more off the bench.

A Peterson dunk with 5:04 remaining closed a one-time 10-point deficit to two, 70-68, before a hyped crowd celebrating "Rattler Madness" to tip off the 2018-2019 season.

But the Rangers blitzed the Snakes over the next 1:30, going on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 78-68.

St. Mary's followed with a run of its own, as a pair of Brooks 3-pointers along with a 3-pointer from Houston had the Rattlers back in the game, trailing just 84-83 with 20 seconds remaining.

Despite it being the offense that shined most of the evening, the Rattlers then turned to their defense, forcing a turnover on the in-bounds pass to set up McCullough's go-ahead bucket.

But in a back-and-forth game, Brodbeck delivered the final statement, scoring two of his 23 points.

Day Two of the tournament will continue Saturday, with the Rattlers hosting Colorado Mines at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
