Hat trick magic from Botello leads Rattlers to historic victory

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communcations

SAN ANTONIO — Pato Botello Faz provided another memorable moment in his illustrious Rattler career as his hat trick propelled St. Mary's to a 3-2 victory over Texas A&M International.

Thursday was White Out Night at Sigma Beta Chi Field. Prior to the match, the senior class of Daniel Linstead, Mostafa Kamal, Reis Woolley and Botello were recognized in front of the capacity crowd.

When the match began, the Rattlers struck quickly on a set piece that resulted in Botello's first goal of the night. The opportunity was created off an assist from Nenad Markovic as the tandem once again connected for a Rattler score.

The Dustdevils were able to equalize before the half, setting the stage for another Botello go-ahead goal in the 50th minute.

TAMIU refused to go away, tying the match once again in the 66th minute, turning up the intensity of the hotly contested match. A total of 13 yellow cards and a red card were assessed in the match that saw 48 fouls called between the two sides.

A foul in the box on Jesus Valenzuela in the late stages of the match provided St. Mary's an opportunity to pick up the victory.

Enter Botello, who deposited the penalty kick into the upper left corner to secure his first-career hat trick and the Rattler victory.

Botello's performance put him in elite company as he moved to a tie for second all-time in goals scored in a single season in the history of the Men's Soccer program. His 40 total points this season also ties him for third most in a single season.

The win keeps the Rattlers (10-3-3, HC 8-3-2) in contention to take the South Division of the Heartland Conference while also virtually assuring them a home playoff match next week.

With the victory, the Rattlers push their win percentage to .718, the highest it's been since 1997, before the program joined the NCAA. The team's 10th victory also marked the first time since 2001 and 2002 that the Rattlers produced back-to-back 10-win seasons.

St. Mary's will close out the season on Saturday against Newman before heading to the postseason next week.
