Rattlers sweep Hilltoppers in Battle of the Saints

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's rolled to victory past its rivals St. Edward's on Thursday night, defeating the Hilltoppers 3-0 at Bill Greehey Arena.
 
Setting the tone in the first set, the Rattlers refused to give the Hilltoppers a chance in the match. Trailing 16-14 in the opening frame, St. Mary's seven-unanswered points enroute to a 25-18 win in game 1.
 
KK Payne led the charge with 11 kills, two blocks and a service ace. Monica Ramon logged 15 digs, two assists and an ace while Bree Perry led the way with 27 assists. A force at the net, Jaycie Pluenneke posted a team-high four blocks, spearheading the St. Mary's defense.
 
The biggest challenge for the home team came in the final set as St. Mary's trailed 23-22. Outscoring St. Edward's 4-1 over the final five points propelled the Rattlers to victory as Payne produced a pair of key points that ushered the Rattlers to their fourth victory in conference this season.
 
Saturday, the St. Mary's will host a DBU squad that picked up a victory over the Rattlers earlier in the season in non conference play.
