Hot start not enough as Volleyball drops Heartland opener to SEU

AUSTIN, Texas — A promising start to the match wasn't enough to propel St. Mary's Volleyball past rival St. Edward's in Heartland Conference-opening play on Thursday.

The Hilltoppers dropped the Rattlers in straight sets, 3-0, in the highly anticipated "Battle of the Saints" matchup.

But it was the Rattlers who got off to the hot start, taking a 20-12 lead in the first set before seeing St. Edward's storm back to outscore StMU 13-3 down the stretch. St. Edward's won sets 2 and 3, 25-20 and 25-19, respectively.

Tarine Grace led St. Mary's (5-7) with eight kills, followed by Channing Hankins' seven. Bree Perry posted a team-leading 32 assists, while Monica Ramon led the way with 10 digs.

St. Edward's outhit St. Mary's .297-.204 in the match.

The Rattlers will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to Dallas to take on DBU at 12 p.m. at the Burg Center.
