Rattlers fall short in heartbreaking Heartland Final

Four named to All-Tournament Team

SAN ANTONIO — The top two teams in the Heartland Conference met twice more with the Heartland Conference Championship at stake on Saturday afternoon as St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian played for an automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

In what was a rematch of last year's final, St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian dueled to a pair of 4-2 games, both of which falling in favor of the defending champion Lady Chaps.

With a chance to clinch the championship in the day's opening game, the Rattlers turned to pitcher Hope Russell who provided a strong 5.1 innings of work where she allowed only two earned runs on five hits.

Down 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the "Cardiac Kids" began to make their run. Heartland Conference Player of the Year Raynelle Nash led the inning with a single before Brenda Iparraguirre launched the only home run of the tournament to the left field bullpen, cutting the Lady Chaps' lead in half.

But the comeback would fall short as the Rattlers were forced to play in another winner-take-all game against the Lady Chaperals.

Scoring came quickly in Game 2 as the Lady Chaps struck for four in the top of the first. In typical fashion, the Rattlers would respond, countering with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Once again, Iparraguirre delivered at the dish, posting her second two-RBI game of the day with a double to right that would score Kristal Salinas and Alena Moreno.

After a tough first inning, Jorden Russell pitched effectively, keeping LCU scoreless throughout the rest of the game, allowing only four hits in the final six innings of play. But it wouldn't be enough as the Rattlers fell to the Lady Chaps, 4-2.

Following the game, Miranda Medina, Olivia Van Hook, Ashley Mills and Iparraguirre were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Entering the weekend as the No. 3 team in the South Central Region, the Rattlers will now wait for an at-large bid to the South Central Region tournament.
