SAN ANTONIO — The Cardiac Kids of St. Mary's were at it again to open up the Heartland Conference Softball Championship tournament Thursday afternoon.

Top-seeded St. Mary's squeaked past No. 4 seed Texas A&M International, 2-1, on Alena Moreno's walk-off hit in the eighth inning at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

Moreno's two-out single to right field drove in Elizabeth Phillips, who led off the inning with a single to right field.

The Rattlers survived waiting for their bats to warm up thanks to a terrific performance in the circle, highlighted by Ashley Mills' five innings of relief work. Mills got the victory, her 14th of the year, after striking out five over five hitless innings.

Phillips and Olivia Van Hook led the Rattlers with two hits apiece, with Van Hook accounting for the Rattlers' first RBI when they tied up the score at 1-1 in the third. Moreno finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.

St. Mary's (41-12) will return to action at 12 p.m. Friday, when the Rattlers will entertain No. 2 seed Lubbock Christian. The winner will punch their ticket into Saturday's championship game.
