Resilient Rattlers denied 4th straight trip to Super Regionals

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CANYON, Texas — "Let's keep fighting," was mantra for the St. Mary's Rattlers prior to the bottom of the seventh inning in the final game of the 2017 South Central Regional against Texas Woman's.

After dropping the first game of the afternoon to the Pioneers, the Rattlers were forced to play a winner-take-all against the No. 6 seed in the South Central Region. Trailing 6-3 in the final game of the double-elimination tournament, the Rattlers, as they did so often, fought back.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, senior Miranda Medina produced her last collegiate hit, a solo home run over the left field fence to trim the deficit. She would finish the game 2-for-3 at the plate, including a RBI-double in the third inning.

Raynelle Nash, who homered in the fifth inning, would follow with a triple to right center field that set the stage for Brenda Iparraguirre who would deliver an RBI-double to bring the Rattlers within one.

That would be as close as the Rattlers would get as they would fall in the rematch of last year's Regional 2 final to TWU, 6-5.

One day after knocking off No. 4 ranked West Texas A&M, the pitching tandem of Hope Russell and Ashley Mills combined for five strikeouts in a valiant effort against the high-powered TWU lineup.

In Game 1, the Rattlers were held to three hits as they fell 3-1. Their lone run came courtesy of an RBI single from Kristal Salinas in the bottom of the second inning.

Both Nash and Alena Moreno posted doubles in 1-for-3 performances at the plate as pitcher Jorden Russell struck out five in 4.1 innings of work.

The Rattlers end the season with a 44-16 record after claiming the Heartland Conference Regular Season Title while earning their 15th NCAA Regional appearance.
