Comeback attempt halted as Snakes drop tournament opener to Lions

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CLEBURNE, Texas — St. Mary's Baseball will play in an elimination game Friday after dropping its opener at the Heartland Conference Championship.

The Rattlers fell to UAFS 6-3 on Thursday, loading the bases with the go-ahead run at the plate before striking out to end the game.

St. Mary's (23-25) didn't allow a run after the second inning, but unfortunately the Lions scored all the runs they would need while grabbing a 5-0 lead over the first two innings. After scoring one in the first, UAFS kept going with four more in the second.

It was Chris Jones' game on the mound from start to finish for the Rattlers, as the senior earned the Game 1 start at the tournament after turning in the best performance from the staff in last week's series against the Lions. He struck out three and walked four in defeat.

Donnie Perez led the way at the plate, going 3 for 5 with two RBI. Bryce Brandl added two hits in a 2-for-3 performance, while James Gillean, Bryan Ramirez and Javier Camacho accounted for the team's three runs.

St. Mary's answered the Lions' roar early, scoring two runs immediately after UAFS's big four-run outburst in the second. Perez's double down the left-field line drove in one run, while the Rattlers cut the deficit to 5-2 moments later when they added another run when Jacob Aguilar grounded into a double play.

But the Rattlers' bats would be grounded until the ninth, when Perez drove in another on a single to center field to leave the Snakes with runners at first and second. Jack Kaiser then drew a bases-loaded walk, setting the scene for a possible comeback. But Nick Yoning forced the game-ending strikeout.

St. Mary's, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will take on No. 1 seed Lubbock Christian in an elimination game at 12 p.m. Friday.
