Grounds' 1-hitter not enough as Rattlers eliminated by LCU

CLEBURNE, Texas — St. Mary's Baseball will play in an elimination game Friday after dropping its opener at the Heartland Conference Championship. 

The Rattlers fell to UAFS 6-3 on Thursday, loading the bases with the go-ahead run at the plate before striking out to end the game. 

The Chaps (37-13) took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when a leadoff walk of Jaime Bustamante eventually produced the first run of the game. Bustamante advanced to second on another walk, took third on a passed ball and then came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Chaps added an insurance run in the eighth in similar fashion, as a leadoff walk of Josh Narvaiz led to their second run of the game. Narvaiz went to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and was brought home on Tony Reyes' sacrifice fly out. 

With the Rattler bats cooling, that was all the run support Lubbock Christian would need. 

James Gillean went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles, including a leadoff single in the first inning, but the rest of the lineup mustered two hits against LCU's quality pitching. Bryan Ramirez was 1 for 3 and Jacob Aguilar 1 for 2 on the day. 

Gillean earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for his performance over the weekend.
