Rattlers overcome TexAnns for 4th straight trip to nationals

By Georgie Gosen | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Tennis has done it again, overcoming Tarleton State, 5-1, for a spot in the NCAA national championships.

With the sun beating down hard at Rohrbach Stadium, the Lady Rattlers (19-2) were ready for battle, carrying through on head coach Lisa Dausin's rallying cry that "iron sharpens iron."

The Rattlers certainly sharpened theirs, earning their fourth straight trip to the national tournament.

With doubles underway Monday afternoon, No.1 tandem Kaylin Kruseman and Tyra Timm took the first win of the day taking care of business, winning 8-3 in doubles. Their win was followed shortly by No. 3 Camille Clausse–Pujo and Sindhu Ravula, dominating 8-3.

"I feel like this match was a bit of a revenge match, since we had previously lost to them the first time we played them," said Kruseman, who fell in the Rattlers' 6-3 victory over Tarleton State earlier this season. "I think it was important for us to start strong and be off fast. I think we could all feel a lot of energy and 3's came off soon after!"

With a 2-1 lead into singles, the Lady Rattlers were on a mission to clinch — and it was a race to the finish for the Lady Rattlers.

No. 1 Clausse-Pujo led the way, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Following in her wake came No. 2 Kruseman, overcoming her opponent 6-1,6-3.

No. 3 Ally Maciel, No. 4 Timm, No. 5 Ravula and No. 6 Mariela Sarinana were all left to fight it out. All the Lady Rattlers were up in the second set, but it was No. 4 Timm who shone bright clinching for the second week in a row by overcoming her opponent 6-1, 6-3.

"The only thing I care about and can think of when I'm out there is playing for all the girls in blue and gold who push me every day in practice," Timm said "Clinching two weeks in a row has just been a bonus."

The Rattlers will head to Altamonte, Florida for the NCAA national championships, where their opponent will soon be determined.
