Rattlers complete sweep of Jets, punch ticket to Heartland tourney

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kansas — St. Mary's Baseball got above .500 for the season and moved into a tie for first place in the Heartland Conference standings — and, in the process, punched its ticket into next month's Heartland Conference Championships in Cleburne, Texas.

Not bad for one day's work.

The Rattlers completed the series sweep of Newman on Friday, taking the doubleheader 7-0 and 5-3 to improve to 23-21 on the season.

The victories catapulted the Snakes into a tie for first place with Lubbock Christian in the conference standings, though the Chaps hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their series victory over St. Mary's earlier this season. It all sets up what should be a classic clash between St. Mary's and UAFS in next week's final series of the regular season, beginning Friday at 3 p.m. at Dickson Stadium. UAFS is just a game back of St. Mary's (16-5 in conference) as the teams jockey for position entering postseason play.

Donnie Perez and Beau Barnes were perfect at the plate in Friday's nightcap, going a combined 9 for 9 at the plate. Perez was 5 for 5 with a run, while Barnes was 4 for 4 with two RBI in a dazzling display.

In the opener, Chris Jones pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out five to improve to 5-4 on the season.

Perez and Jacob Aguilar each homered in the game, with Perez going 2 for 4 with one RBI and a run scored. Aguilar went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run. James Gillean added two hits in a 2-for-4 showing, while Jonathan Ramirez scored a pair of runs.

Hayden Hibler picked up the Game 2 victory, improving to 5-2 on the season.
