Women's Tennis blanks UAFS to return to Heartland title match

DALLAS — St. Mary's Women's Tennis opened the Heartland Conference championships in dominant fashion, blanking UAFS 5-0 in the semifinals.  

The Lady Rattlers, ranked 12th nationally, came out strong with No. 2 Ally Maciel and Mariela Sarinana cruising their way to an 8-1 doubles victory.  Following their stride came No. 3 Camille Clausse-Pujo and Sindhu Ravula, who overcame the Lions, winning 8-4. That left No. 1 Kaylin Kruseman and Tyra Timm to claw their way to victory, prevailing 8-6.

With a 3-0 doubles lead going into singles, the Lady Rattlers kept the momentum going with No.3 Maciel driving them to their first singles win, dominating 6-3, 6-3. 

"I feel like we all went out there really focused and determined, which showed in the doubles and got us the early lead," Maciel said. "I think I took that momentum into singles and just stayed focused, which helped me close out my match."

No. 5 Sarinana dug deep and showed no sings of slowing down, clinching the match for the Lady Rattlers and taking them into the final, winning 7-5, 6-1. 

The Lady Rattlers will be back at 9 a.m. Saturday to take on St. Edward's in the Heartland Conference championship.
