Rattlers sweep doubleheader against Aggies

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — As set up for Fiesta Oyster Bake continued in the background on the eve of the annual event, Rattler Baseball had a fiesta of their own Thursday afternoon as they swept a pair of games against the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies.

The Rattlers shut out the Aggies in Game 1, 8-0, before holding on to a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Spearheading the Rattler attack in the opener was Donnie Perez who started the game with a solo blast to left field. He would finish the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.

Holden Grounds tossed a complete game, five-hit shutout as he struck out five batters in seven innings.

Game 2 saw the Rattlers jump out to the lead once again off a Zach Johnson RBI single up the middle. After OPSU struck for a pair of unanswered runs, the Rattlers responded with a three-run fourth inning that started with a Beau Barnes RBI single.

Jack Kaiser went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored while Zach Johnson would go 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Starting pitcher Chris Jones improved to 4-4 on the year after going 7.1 innings while Trent Rousseau almost pitched a perfect 1.2 innings, allowing only one hit, in what would be his eighth save of the season.

The Rattlers and the Aggies will conclude the three-game series tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Dickson Stadium.
