Rattlers jolt Hilltoppers with doubleheader sweep

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — The first two rounds of the Battle of the Saints belonged to the St. Mary's as the Rattlers defeated St. Edward's in comeback fashion in Game 1, winning 2-1, before taking the nightcap 7-1.

After St. Edward's posted the opening run of the day in the sixth inning of Game 1, the Rattlers, with their backs against the wall, responded with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Beau Barnes singled on the second pitch of the inning before a Donnie Perez double down the line, scoring Barnes from first base.

Two batters later, Jacob Aguilar would score Perez with an RBI double of his own, putting the Rattlers ahead.

Holden Grounds tossed a gem against the once nationally ranked Hilltoppers, going 6.1 innings, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out four on 113 pitches.

Earning his sixth save of the season was Trent Rousseau who retired the final two batters of the ballgame with the bases loaded.

Game 2 started with a bang, courtesy of a two-run blast from Jack Kaiser in the top of the first inning.

The Rattlers would pour three more runs in the fourth inning off a trio of RBI singles from Javier Camacho, Bryce Brandl and James Gillean. A two-RBI single from Barnes would push the Rattler lead to seven in the sixth.

A complete game from Chris Jones paved the way to victory in the nightcap as he allowed only one run on four hits with six strikeouts, keeping the Hilltoppers off the board through the first eight innings.

Both teams will conclude the three-game set tomorrow at Lucian-Hamilton Field with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
