Rattlers pull ahead late to earn split against TAMUK

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Oscar Betancourt's go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning led St. Mary's Baseball to a split in nonconference play Friday evening at Dickson Stadium.

St. Mary's took Game 2 of the doubleheader 5-4 after dropping the opener 5-2.

Trailing 3-1 for most of the night, the Rattler bats got going in the seventh, as James Gillean's 2-RBI single to left-center field evened the score at 3-3. Moments later, a bases-loaded walk of Jack Kaiser gave the Rattlers a 5-4 lead — but the advantage was short-lived as the Javelinas struck for a run of their own in the top of the next frame to tie things up at 5-5.

Trent Rousseau shut the door on any Javelina comeback hopes in the ninth, striking out the final out for his fourth strikeout in two innings. Rousseau improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.

In Game 1, a Donnie Perez solo home run in the fourth put the Rattlers (13-17) on the board, as they trailed 3-1. But the Snakes surrendered runs in the fifth and sixth innings in the eventual 5-2 loss.

James Gillean went 3 for 4 with a run scored in the opener, while Beau Barnes went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Gillean added another hit with two RBI in the nightcap, finishing the day 4 for 8 at the plate. Perez went 2 for 3 with a run scored in Game 2.

The Rattlers will return to Heartland Conference play next week, when they entertain Texas A&M International in a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
