Rattlers drop first Heartland series as LCU completes sweep

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — St. Mary's bats cooked up 12 runs in Saturday's doubleheader against Lubbock Christian, but the scoring output wasn't enough as Rattler Baseball dropped the twin bill.

The Chaparrals won 8-5 and 12-7, sweeping the three-game series following Friday's victory.

Game 2 saw St. Mary's (12-14, 6-3 in Heartland Conference) jump to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the advantage was short-lived as the Chaps struck for five runs in the bottom of the frame. LCU, ranked 16th in the nation, tacked on three more in the fourth to take command of the game.

Steven Wynn produced a pinch-hit two-RBI showing for the Snakes, while starters Jack Kaiser, Jacob Aguilar, Zach Johnson and Jonathan Ramirez each added an RBI in the game.

St. Mary's took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning of Game 1, but LCU again answered with two-run outputs in both the fifth and sixth innings to retake the lead for good.

James Gillean was 2 for 4 in the game, while Donnie Perez went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Beau Barnes added two RBI, while Aguilar and Johnson also drove in one run apiece.

St. Mary's will return to the field on Tuesday, when it hosts Our Lady of the Lake at 6 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
