Sweep of Eagles propels Rattlers atop Heartland Conference

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Continuing its strong start to conference play, the St. Mary's Rattlers defeated the Oklahoma Christian Eagles 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Dickson Stadium, completing a three-game sweep.

Following a St. Edward's loss to UA Fort Smith later in the afternoon, the Rattlers jumped to first in the conference standings as the only undefeated team in Heartland play.

Big games at the plate from James Gillean, Jack Kaiser and Zach Johnson propelled the Rattlers to their sixth straight victory.

Kaiser began the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning as he belted an 0-2 pitch over the right field wall into the Rattler bullpen.

Johnson posted a pair of doubles in a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI at the plate while Gillean collected three hits and a run batting from the leadoff spot.

Hayden Hibler notched his second win of the season after tossing five shutout innings. Trent Rousseau posted his second save of the series, his fifth of the season, after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The Rattlers will travel to Lubbock Christian for a three-game set beginning on March 24 at Hays Field.
