Softball splits Heartland opener in Lubbock

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — The two best teams in the Heartland Conference a season ago squared off in Lubbock Friday evening as the No. 3 St. Mary's Rattlers visited the No. 20 Lubbock Christian Lady Chaparrals.

Each team collected a victory as the Rattlers took the opener 7-4 before falling in the nightcap, 8-5.

In the opener, the Rattlers fell behind 2-0 in the first. A Miranda Medina homer in the second got the Snakes on the board, the first of five unanswered runs over the course of the next three innings.

An RBI single up the middle from Raynelle Nash tied the game an inning later. The deadlock would break the inning after with Alessandra Ortiz roping an RBI-double down the right field line before Alena Moreno would knock-in two runs with a triple to left.

Moreno would finish 2-for-3 with three RBI while Nash racked up a trio of base hits. Hannah Michel scored two runs on a pair of hits in three at-bats, including an RBI in the sixth that extended the Rattler lead.

Jorden Russell went 4.2 innings to earn her eighth victory of the season while Ashley Mills collected her third save.

Mills would get the start in the nightcap, only to run into a Lady Chaps team that found their bats at the right time, avenging the earlier loss by a final of 8-5.

For the senior Mills, the loss marks her first ever as a Rattler after earning victories in each of her previous 17 decisions dating back to last season.

Despite trailing by seven in the fourth inning, the Rattlers responded with five-straight runs beginning with Nash scoring on a wild pitch.

A Michel RBI-double an inning later was the catalyst for what would become a four-run inning that saw RBI-singles from Moreno, Nash and Brenda Iparraguirre.

The rally would fall short as the Lady Chaps would strike for one more run in the fifth, holding off the surging Rattlers.

St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian will conclude the opening weekend of conference play on Saturday at noon.
