Shooting woes doom @StMUWBB against OC

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Basketball could not shake sluggish starts to the first and second halves Thursday evening, dropping a 68-47 Heartland Conference contest to visiting Oklahoma Christian.

The Rattlers shot just 26.4 percent from the floor for the game, connecting on 19 of 72 field-goal attempts and 8 of 35 from 3-point range.

Ciaira Briseno led the Rattlers (17-5, 9-3) with eight points, while Arysia Porter, LaBraile Fields and Kiara Etheridge scored seven apiece. Briana Bustamante also added a season-high-tying six points off the bench late in the game.

St. Mary's had a rough start to the first half, falling behind 15-3 in the opening minutes as the Eagles connected from deep range to put the Snakes in a hole. But St. Mary's clawed back to close it to as close as two points, and trailed 34-27 at the break.

Oklahoma Christian opened the second half in similar fashion to the first, however, taking a 54-33 lead by the end of the third quarter to effectively put the game out of reach.

Etheridge finished with seven rebounds in the game, leaving her nine short of tying Morgan Pullins — and 10 short of surpassing Pullins — as the program's all-time leading rebounder. Pullins graduated with 965 career boards.
