SAN ANTONIO — Donnie did it again.

St. Mary's left fielder Donnie Perez kept his hot bat alive on Super Sunday, delivering the go-ahead RBI and scoring an insurance run in the eighth inning of a 5-2 victory over Arkansas Tech at Dickson Stadium.

The victory allowed the Rattlers (2-1) to walk away from the three-game season-opening series with the 2-1 edge.

Perez finished the game 3 of 4 with two RBI, giving him eight hits in his first 14 at-bats to start the season to go along with seven RBI.

First baseman Jack Kaiser added three hits of his own, going 3 for 4 with a run scored. Right fielder Bryce Brandl added two RBI in the game.

Reliever Trent Rousseau shut things down after entering the game in the seventh inning, striking out three and surrendering no hits over 2 2/3 innings of work. The senior collected his first win of the season.
Transfer pitcher Holden Grounds made his first start, going a solid six innings without yielding an earned run. He fanned four and scattered five hits while leaving with the game tied, 2-2, after six innings.

St. Mary's broke out of the 2-2 tie when Perez singled through the right side to bring in Kaiser in the bottom of the eighth. Moments later, Brandl singled through the same gap to bring home Perez, increasing the lead to 4-2. Catcher Scott Short drove in another insurance run in the inning, making it 5-2 entering the ninth.

Rousseau took care of the rest, as the Rattlers shut out the Wonder Boys in eight of the nine innings. Arkansas Tech scored both runs in the top of the third.

St. Mary's will return to action Tuesday night for the third annual Spring Fling Chili Cook-off when it hosts crosstown rival Our Lady of the Lake at 6 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
