Wonder Boy comeback stymies Rattler Baseball on Opening Day

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Arkansas Tech scored eight unanswered runs over the final four innings Friday night to snag a 10-6 Opening Day victory over St. Mary's Baseball at Dickson Stadium.

A three-run home run for the Wonder Boys highlighted a four-run sixth inning that erased a one-time four-run deficit and deadlocked the game at 6-6.

Then, in the eighth, a pair of runs crossed on two separate wild pitches for an 8-6 lead that Arkansas Tech (1-0) would not relinquish.

Earlier, a pair of three-run outbursts saw the Rattlers (0-1) climb out of an early 2-0 hole to storm toward a 6-2 lead in the fifth.

Newcomer Oscar Betancourt made his first hit as a Rattler a memorable one, tripling to right field to drive in Beau Barnes and Bryce Brandl. Then, with the score knotted at 2-2, shortstop Bryan Ramirez drove in Betancourt on a sacrifice fly out to left field for the Rattlers' first lead.

In the fifth, first baseman Jack Kaiser extended the Snakes' lead with a single to left-center field that brought in third baseman Jacob Aguilar. Moments later, outfielder Donnie Perez belted one of two doubles on the day to bring in two more runs for a 6-2 lead.
