Comeback falls short in @StMUsoftball's opener

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DURANT, Oklahoma — St. Mary's Softball's rally fell just short in the Rattlers' season opener Friday morning, dropping a 4-3 contest to Cameron at the Southeastern Oklahoma Regional Invitational.

Raynelle Nash opened up 2017 play by going 3 for 5 at the plate with one run scored, and newcomer Staci Johns homered in her first official at-bat of her Rattler career as the Snakes (0-1) tried to overcome a 4-0 deficit.

Cameron (1-0) scored all four runs in a rough fourth inning. But the Rattlers would answer over the coming innings.

Alena Moreno drove in the first run of the season on a sacrifice fly out, and Nash later came around to score in the sixth during a fielding error on a grounder by Marcela Vasquez.

Johns hit a solo shot in the seventh to draw the Rattlers within one, and the Snakes later put the tying run at second base while down to their final out. But the Aggies got out of the inning to preserve the win.

St. Mary's will continue play later Friday with another tournament game against Missouri Southern at 5 p.m.
