Softball splits doubleheader with Texanns

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — St. Mary's Softball split its doubleheader with Tarleton State on Tuesday night with the Rattlers winning the opener 5-0 before dropping the nightcap 5-4.
 
Sparked by a stellar pitching performance from Jorden Russell who struck out eight in a complete-game shutout effort, the Rattlers picked up their 11th straight victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
Hannah Michel went 1-for-2 at the plate with a game-high, three RBI and a run scored while Marcela Vasquez, Kristal Salinas and Alessandra Ortiz each posted a pair of hits and a run scored. Salinas would also record and RBI and a walk in the victory.
 
In the nightcap, the Rattlers took a three-run lead to the seventh, leading 4-1 over the Texanns. One out away from picking up another victory, the Rattlers conceded a two-run walk-off homer.
 
Olivia Van Hook went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored while Miranda Medina posted a pair of hits with a run scored. Ortiz added a pair of RBI in the top of the seventh that scored both Michel and Van Hook.
 
Ashley Mills received a no decision after tossing 6.2 innings while striking out six.
 
Next week, the Rattlers will travel to San Angelo, Texas for a two-game set against Angelo State on March 8 beginning at 4 p.m.
