Newly ranked #3 Rattlers tested, rally past Lions

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

COMMERCE, Texas — Down 3-0 against Texas A&M-Commerce in the top of the seventh inning, the St. Mary's Rattlers were facing the possibility of losing its first game in over two weeks.

That was when the Rattlers struck for six-unanswered runs, enroute to a 6-3 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader with the Lions.

It began with a Raynelle Nash home run with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Then, with two outs, a Kristal Salinas 2-RBI double brought the Rattlers even before an Alessandra Ortiz RBI double scored Salinas to break the deadlock.

Nash finished the opener going 3-for-5 at the plate while Salinas would finish 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jorden Russell earned her sixth victory of the season by tossing a complete game, striking out six and allowing only two earned runs on four hits.

The nightcap saw a similar trend with the Lions jumping out to an early lead before the Rattlers would rally.

A five-run deficit was the mountain to climb for the Rattlers on this occassion. But just like in Game 1, they would respond.

In the third, a bases clearing 3-RBI double from Brenda Iparraguirre trimmed the Lions' lead to two. Then, in the fourth, Salinas would deliver once again, this time with a lead-off solo homer to left center field.

Four batters later, Alena Moreno crushed a 2-run blast to right that would ultimately give the Rattlers a 6-5 victory.

Ashley Mills improved to 4-0 on the season after tossing 5.1 innings in relief, collecting five strikeouts in the process.

Up next for the Rattlers will be a trip to Stephenville, Texas when they visit Tarleton State for a doubleheader on Feb. 28.
