Valiant fourth quarter Rattler run falls short at Newman

SAN ANTONIO — The final week of the regular season for the St. Mary's Rattlers began with a 73-68 loss on the road for against the Newman Jets.
 
After being outscored 27-9 in the second quarter, the Rattlers trailed 40-21 at the half.
 
Once the second half began, the Rattlers rode the senior tandem of Kiara Etheridge and LaBraile Fields whom each poured 18 points in the second half.
 
In addition to her 18 points, Etheridge would add 10 rebounds and six steals in the final half of play. The program's all-time rebound leader would finish the game with 24 points, 16 rebounds, seven steals and three blocks, all of which were game-highs.
 
St. Mary's cut the deficit down to two with two minutes left to play, but that would be as close as it would get as Newman held on for the five-point victory.
 
Off the bench, Tia Mason posted eight points and two rebounds on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.
 
Saturday, the Rattlers will close out the season when they visit Oklahoma Panhandle State at the Oscar Williams Field House at 1 p.m.
