Wetzell's 29 not enough against Jets

WICHITA, Kansas — Yanni Wetzell's season-high-tying 29 points were not enough as St. Mary's Men's Basketball fell to Newman 90-72 in their next-to-last game of the regular season. 

The Rattlers, who have clinched a spot in next week's Heartland Conference Championship tournament, outscored Newman 38-35 in the second half but could not overcome a first half that saw the Jets carry a 55-34 lead into the break. 

Wetzell's 29 points came on 11-of-17 shooting, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range, while Will Ferguson chipped in 15 points for the Snakes (10-17, 7-10 Heartland Conference). Dimitri Peterson led the way with 10 rebounds and Robbie Benavides added a team-high seven assists. 

St. Mary's shot 6 of 16 from 3-point range and 40.6 overall from the floor, and out rebounded the Jets 39-31. But they ultimately were undone by a Jets (9-17, 7-10) team that shot nearly 60 percent from the floor (31 of 52) and made 13 of 25 3-point attempts.

St. Mary's will close out the regular season at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Goodwell, Oklahoma.
