Rattlers take season finale, lock 7-seed in Heartland Conference

GOODWELL, Oklahoma — St. Mary's Men's Basketball ended the 2016-17 regular season on a high-note, defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State 87-71 at the Oscar Williams Field House.
 
With the victory and Newman's overtime loss to Texas A&M International, the Rattlers secured the No. 7 seed in the Heartland Conference Tournament.
 
Leading for the entirety of the ballgame, St. Mary's jumped out to a 10-point lead midway through the first half.
 
Sparked by Yanni Wetzell and Ed Seay, the Rattlers entered the half with a 46-36 edge. Wetzell scored 14 of his game-high 28 points in the first half while Seay finished the game with 17 points, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the second half.
 
For the second-straight game, Wetzell was the focus of the Rattler offense, averaging 28. 5 points in the final weekend of the regular season.
 
Freddie Williams and Robbie Benavides were also key contributors in the victory. Williams poured in 11 points as Benavides came one field goal short of a double-double with eight points and 12 assists.
 
The Heartland Conference Tournament will begin on March 2 in Tulsa, Oklahoma with the No. 7 Rattlers playing against No. 2 seed, and co-regular season champions, Texas A&M International in the opening round at 7:30 p.m.
