Vasquez, Iparraguirre home runs spur #10 Rattlers past #12 UCO

SAN ANTONIO — Home runs from Marcela Vasquez and Brenda Iparraguirre highlighted a big third inning that propelled No. 10 St. Mary's Softball past No. 12 Central Oklahoma, 5-1, on Saturday. 

Vasquez launched a two-out, two-run blast to left field before Iparraguirre — the very next batter — fired a solo shot to the same location as part of a three-run inning that opened up a 4-0 lead on Day 2 of the Rattler Invitational. 

Hope Russell picked up the victory in the circle, going five full innings while surrendering just a single run. Ashley Mills closed the door over the final two innings, striking out three of the six batters she faced. 

Vasquez finished 1 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Iparraguirre was 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored. Hannah Michel, Raynelle Nash, Kristal Salinas, Alessandra Ortiz and Olivia Van Hook each added a hit in the game. 

Ortiz provided the go-ahead RBI on a two-out double that brought in Miranda Medina for a 1-0 lead in the second. Nash added an RBI in the fourth on a hard-hit single through the left side that drove in Van Hook. 

St. Mary's will resume action at 5 p.m. against an opponent to be determined at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.
