Johns ignites Rattlers as they run past Toppers

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Softball improved to 4-0 in the Rattler Invitational and set itself to play in Sunday's finale for first place with Saturday evening's 6-1 victory over visiting St. Edward's.

Staci Johns drove in two runs at the plate and pitched five innings to get the victory in the circle for the 10th-ranked Rattlers.

Johns, a freshman from Elgin, Texas, struck out three and allowed just one unearned run in the nightcap of Day 2 of the Rattler Invitational at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

Johns' RBI single highlighted a three-run first inning that saw St. Mary's (13-2) turn an early 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 advantage. The Snakes would never look back, tacking on an insurance run in the second, fourth and fifth innings to lead 6-1.

Alena Moreno finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Miranda Medina was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Alessandra Ortiz and Kristal Salinas also had multi-hit games, as Ortiz was 2 for 3 with a triple and a run scored, and Salinas was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Perhaps most impressive for Medina and Salinas were their work in the field, as the middle-infielding duo made back-to-back diving catches to get out of the third inning. Medina retreated into shallow left-center field for a sensational diving grab that drew the "SportsCenter" jingle — only to be outdone by Salinas' phenomenal diving grab in foul territory near the Hilltoppers' dugout to get out of the inning.

The victory sets up the Rattlers to face Metro State in Sunday's first-place game, which will be held at 12:15 p.m. at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's. Central Oklahoma and St. Edward's will battle at 10 a.m. for third place.
