Early deficit grounds Rattlers against Chico State

HOUSTON — St. Mary's fell to Chico State, 6-3, on Day 2 of the Houston Winter Invitational.
 
The Rattlers fell behind in the third inning after conceding four runs on three errors. In the seventh inning, they began to rally, scoring two runs in the frame courtesy of a Bryce Brandl RBI double and an Edward Pena RBI single.
 
But that would be as close as the Rattlers would get as the Wildcats would respond with two more runs of their own an inning later before a Zach Johnson RBI single would be their last run of the game.
 
Bryan Ramirez finished 2-for-3 with a run scored while Brandl went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Second baseman James Gillean impressed at the plate recording a trio of singles and a stolen base.
 
Sunday, the Rattlers will close out the Houston Winter Invitational against the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas at 6 p.m. inside Minute Maid Park.
