Rangel’s strong outing powers @StMUsoftball past Toppers

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's ended Day 1 of the Rattler Invitational the same way that it began, with a victory. This time, it was 3-0 victory against Heartland Conference rival, St. Edward's that places the host team at the top of the table in the round robin tournament.
 
Kristi Rangel outdueled St. Edward's ace, Lauren Slatten, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Ashley Mills recorded the save, shutting the door on St. Edward's with a strikeout.
 
Offensively, the Rattler bench provided a lift as Elizabeth Phillips and Staci Johns made the most of their lone at-bats. In the fourth, Johns notched an RBI-single to center as Phillips and Brenda Iparraguirre scored.
 
An inning later, Phillips would deliver an RBI-single of her own that would score Alessandra Ortiz.
 
The No. 10 Rattlers will start things off on Day 2 when they play No. 12 Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m.
