Rattlers outdueled in Houston Winter Invitational opener

HOUSTON — For the fourth time in a week, the St. Mary's Rattlers and the Tarleton State Texans met on the diamond. This time, the two teams met in the big ballpark in Houston, Minute Maid Park with Tarleton State taking down the Rattlers, 9-6.
 
It was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams as St. Mary's held a slim one-run lead heading into the bottom of the second and third innings. But for every Rattler lead, the Texans had an answer, outscoring the Snakes 5-2 through the final six innings.
 
Donnie Perez continues his hot start to the season despite the loss, crushing a two-run homer into the Landry's Crawford Boxes in left field at Minute Maid Park.
 
Beau Barnes, Bryce Brandl and Oscar Betencourt each produced RBI hits, with Brandl reaching base twice in the game, the second coming after being hit by a pitch.
 
Pitcher Zach De La Garza struck out five in 3.1 innings of work with Matt Merrill posting a trio of Ks in 3.2 innings of work.
 
St. Mary's will face Chico State on Day 2 of the Houston Winter Invitational tomorrow at 6 p.m.
