Brooks' 18-foot jumper buries St. Ed's at buzzer in OT

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's men's basketball coach Jim Zeleznak's 200th career win couldn't have been much sweeter Saturday afternoon.

Skyler Brooks buried an 18-foot jumper with 0.3 seconds left in overtime to take down rival St. Edward's, 86-84, for the "Battle of the Saints" victory on Senior Day at Bill Greehey Arena.

It was the Rattlers' second last-second shot in nearly five minutes of action, as Will Ferguson drained a 23-foot 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in regulation to force OT tied at 71-71. 4569

Ferguson starred throughout the game, pouring in 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go along with five assists. Dimitri Peterson added 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Yanni Wetzell scored 14 before fouling out toward the end of regulation.

Freddie Williams chipped in nine points and eight boards in the victory, while Benavides added eight. Brooks finished with six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Prior to the game, the Rattlers honored senior Ed Seay, a driving inspiration for the squad after returning from last year's season-ending injury. And afterward, Rattlers past and present gathered for a reunion celebrating the program's illustrious history.

In between, the crowd of nearly 500 were treated to quite the show.

The Rattlers carried a 33-32 lead into halftime in a game that saw 11 ties and nine lead changes. The largest lead either team ever possessed was just four points.

St. Mary's played sound defense throughout, limiting St. Edward's to 40.7 percent shooting from the floor (24 of 59), including a 7-of-23 clip from 3-point range. The Rattlers also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Rattlers 48-31.

For Zeleznak, the 12th-year head coach improved his career record to 200-142.

St. Mary's will hit the road for the remainder of the regular season, starting next Saturday, Feb. 18, at Texas A&M International. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. from the Kinesiology and Convocation Building in Laredo, Texas.
