Men’s Hoops digs deep in OT win over Eagles

Zeleznak picks up career win 199

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — It took an extra period for the St. Mary's Rattlers to pick up a 92-88 win over the Oklahoma Christian Eagles Thursday night, the 199th of Jim Zeleznak's coaching career.

In what was a tight contest through most of the game, the Rattlers seemed to gain control of the game midway through the second half when they held a 10-point lead, the largest of the game for either team.

A late OC rally, capped by a Marcus Mathieu layup with four seconds left, forced overtime. There, the Rattlers made enough plays to outlast the Eagles for their fifth conference win of the season, improving to 8-16 overall and 5-9 in conference, putting them a half game ahead of the Eagles in the Heartland Conference standings.

The win also marks the Rattlers' fourth straight home win dating back to Jan. 19 and it snaps a recent four-game skid.

Freddie Williams and Yanni Wetzell each had monster games in the victory. Wetzell posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to five assists. Williams added 21 points and five rebounds while Will Ferguson posted 12 points and seven assists.

Ed Seay and Dimitri Peterson came up huge off the bench. Seay provided a lift with 15 points and seven boards while Peterson collected a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks.

The Rattlers will host rival St. Edward's in the home finale at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
