Rattlers strike first in series opener against Texans

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's outlasted Tarleton State in the opening game of a three-game series, defeating the Texans 8-7 Friday evening at Dickson Stadium.
 
Jacob Arevalo kicked off the scoring in the second inning with a two-RBI double to left that scored Beau Barnes and Jacob Aguilar. A two-run homer by Jack Kaiser to right field in the third inning would then give the Rattlers a 4-1 lead.
 
But the Texans hung tough, rallying to take a one-run lead in the sixth. That's when the Rattlers responded with two-runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good, collecting their fourth straight victory of the young season.
 
Kaiser finished 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI while Aguilar went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
Redshirt-freshman Sam Wheatley recorded his first career base hit in addition to scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
 
Zach De La Garza earned the victory after throwing 2.2 innings and striking out two. Trent Rousseau notched his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
 
The Rattlers will conclude their three-game set tomorrow with a doubleheader against Tarleton State at Dickson Stadium.
