Women's Basketball upsets UTEP in exhibition

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

EL PASO, Texas — Behind some sharp shooting from long range, St. Mary's Women's Basketball knocked off UTEP 68-62 in exhibition action Saturday.

Arysia Porter poured in 19 points, Sierra Dixon scored 18 and Soteria Banks added 17 as the Rattlers upset the NCAA Division I Miners on the road.

Dixon hit six 3-pointers, Porter was 4 for 5 from distance and Banks added a trio from beyond the arc as St. Mary's collectively drilled 14 3-pointers in the game. The trio also combined for 13 assists, with Porter leading the way with five, and Banks and Dixon adding four apiece.

A Porter 3-pointer with 7:36 remaining put the Rattlers up 61-49 for their largest lead of the game at 12. But UTEP, which led by 11 in the first half, came all the way back in a hurry, tying the game at 62-62 with 2:25 left.

But Dixon ensured the Rattlers calmly weathered the storm, draining consecutive 3-pointers to build a six-point lead with just over a minute left. The Rattler defense took over from there, holding the Miners to 0-for-3 shooting and a turnover over the final 65 seconds.

St. Mary's shot 23 of 65 from the floor (35.4 percent), but went 14 of 31 (45.2 percent) from beyond the arc. The Rattlers also converted 8 of 13 free-throw attempts.

The Rattlers will open up the regular season next Friday, Nov. 10, against Texas Woman's at the Tarleton State University Classic.
