FORT SMITH, Arkansas — In August, the St. Mary's Rattlers were slated to finish sixth in the Heartland Conference. Three months later, those same Rattlers can call themselves Heartland Conference Champions following a 3-0 sweep of the five-time defending Heartland Tournament Champions UAFS on Saturday.

Led by tournament MVP Monica Ramon, St. Mary's claimed its first Heartland Conference Championship since 2010.

Ramon recorded a match-high 32 digs as Channing Hankins added 13 kills while Bree Perry posted 37 assists. Hankins and Perry would go on to be named to the All-Tournament Team, two nights after being named to the All-Conference First Team.

After taking the first set, the Rattlers seized control of the match in the second set. The frantic game saw the Rattlers jump to an early 8-1 lead before the Lions rallied to take the lead late. With the Lions on the verge of taking the set on two separate occasions, the Rattlers responded each time, eventually taking the set 29-27.

This adds to what has been an exceptional season for the Rattlers which saw the program piece together its best winning percentage since 2000, most overall wins since 2006 and its best conference winning percentage in 17 years.

On Monday, the Rattlers will host a watch party beginning at 6 p.m. on Monday inside the Hospitality Suite in Bill Greehey Arena as they await the announcement of their opponent for the opening round of the NCAA D-II South Central Regional.
